The Single Payer Action Network (SPAN) is a group of action-oriented activists and organizers working to promote a medicare-style health insurance system for all Americans. SPAN members believe that national discourse regarding healthcare reform has been skewed by right-wing demagogues, and that the current House and Senate legislation must be sharply rebuked as a bailout for insurance corporations that unfairly mandates citizens to purchase a defective product. We demand healthcare for all, paid for through progressive taxation (single payer).
Single Payer means the following:
Everybody is automatically insured.
Private doctors and hospitals continue to operate as they do now.
Healthcare services are paid for through the government’s single payer insurance system.
Private insurance corporations are no longer responsible for providing basic comprehensive insurance.
Private insurance corporations may still offer supplemental insurance to those who wish to pay for it.
No more co-pays or deductibles.
We can’t afford NOT to have a single payer system of insurance
A single payer system will save our nation $400 billion annually by eliminating private profits, corporate bureaucracy and administration costs. Private insurers spend 30% of every dollar on administration and marketing. Medicare, the government’s single payer system for people over age 64, spends only 3% on administration and does not require marketing to succeed. Also, a national single payer system would enjoy tremendous economic advantages by purchasing medical goods and services in enormous quantities of scale.
